Are they a good thing? The fact that they go bad after a certain number of writes makes me nervous, considering how much I distro hop. Plus, what are you supposed to do about swap space? I dunno; they're fasted, of course, but am I really going to spend all that money on something that I know is going to go bad possibly quicker than an older platter drive?

I think they are a good thing. The read/write cycle is so high, it will take years for you to "use it up". Also, some are faster for write, others for read, and then a third group is equally fast for read/write. Also, it's important to look into read/write speed, so you're getting something that is fast.
If it's something that should worry you, it would be the firmware, since it's probably all proprietary software. But, that's probably also a problem you will have with old fashioned HDDs.

Just check out that email I sent you. Having proprietary crap is pretty much inevitable these days, and it pisses me off.

I agree. Something should be done about it, but not much we can do on our own.

We'll make an old school workstation with 640KiB RAM and 16MiB hard drive and single-core 33MHz processor.

Then again, my grandpa was supposedly an excellent programmer, and he didn't have anything more than an associate's degree, so just because one doesn't have a "higher" education doesn't mean one doesn't know one's stuff.

That is true. There is a company in Chicago that has hired more people based on them having a home lab than having a degree.

I'm working on mine this weekend. Gonna fix the door so cats can't get in, clear it out, set up a nice station for my Funtoo machine, get all my computer books in there, and hopefully have a nice place to work.

Knocking down walls will result in getting into the front hall closet or into the master bedroom, neither of which Lauren would appreciate.

Maybe I could get Lauren's crap out of my garage and put all my stuff in there. It does have a gas heater, and I'm already used to not having A/C.
