Which is the best browser, and why is it GNU IceCat? (Links is an acceptable alternative, but only the most l33t haxx0r5 use it.)

I like GNU IceCat, since it's set up to respect your privacy and freedom. It pretty much blocks everything that isn't free and/or is after tracking you. Gets a good perspective about how much out there on the Internet that is actually tracking you.

Unfortunately, Libre JS breaks a lot of sites. Just goes to show that too many sites try to screw you with hidden crap running on your machine without you even realizing it.

Yeah. Some sites turn on blank to me as a result of it.

I have to disable it to use Facebook, I'm afraid. I'd get rid of it if half my friends and family (including the wife) wouldn't freak out...

I'm in the same boat.

I kind of wonder why uBlock Origin isn't bundled with IceCat.

Also, IceCat is not in the Gentoo/Funtoo repositories... MASSIVE FAIL.

I guess so. I mean, even it was in their repositories, you'd have to compile it, but now you have to get it directly from the GNU site.

Getting it from the GNU site isn't too bad. At least you know you are getting the real thing.

Problem is, last time I tried to compile IceCat from the source from the GNU site, the compile failed and I have no idea why.

Maybe you have better luck the second time doing it.

Speaking of which, I attempted to install Iridium from the AUR, but the compile failed. I kind of wonder if I don't have enough memory/swap to do it...

Trying a new lightweight browser called QupZilla. Pretty good; it's a hell of a lot faster than IceCat, which is nice because my laptop is crap.

Meh, HTML5 didn't work with it, so I uninstalled it. Yes, it's libre. I have moved to Pale Moon, which I believe uses some form of the GPL. It uses a little more RAM than QupZilla, but not much, and I am able to use uBlock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere with it. Interestingly, Pale Moon is in the AUR, so I had to compile it... took forever, but it worked fine.
