So users will have OpenRC by default, but should systemd be available? I guess if we're trying to be about choice, the option should be there, even if it's a crappy option. Also, general dump-on-systemd thread.

Something like that. I think we need to get together and learn everything we can about Gentoo so we can make informed decisisions.

It's pretty sad that every computer I have (all two of them ) run systemd. I need to look into whether you can use OpenRC with Arch...

I have also discovered that Funtoo is a far bigger proponent of OpenRC (and by extension, opponent of systemd) than Gentoo. Interesting.

Nice. It was a lot more distros than I thought it would be. We should link to it in our future wiki.

Apparently it's pretty easy to disable non-free packages on a Gentoo/Funtoo system, but the FSF won't list either distro because of the fact that those packages are in the repositories at all. I guess the same goes for Debian.
At any rate, I guess we'll be more like Gentoo and make both available, but yeah, link to that site about systemd and discourage experienced users from installing it. There are a few other init systems available, like sys v, but since Gentoo and Funtoo use OpenRC, we should probably stick with that.

It just sucks that so much software is being developed with systemd in mind. I'm going to have to research how Gentoo/Funtoo deals with that.

Problem: OpenRC is licensed under the BSD license, not the GPL, so I dunno if it would be FSF-friendly.

That doesn't sound promising. What kind of license is systemd licensed under?

The Arch Linux core repository info says it's licensed under GPL2 and LGPL2.1.

It's not GPLv3, but it's better than some other ridicules license.
