You know, sysvinit is available in Debian, and it's a libre distro (lack of FSF approval notwithstanding)... I wonder if we could use it?

I think I tried one of the BSDs years ago. Hardware support is abysmal. But BSD has its own license, which is considered free software, sooooo...
